Tiled Roof Conservatories – How do you heat yours

How do you control the temperature level in your conservatory?

If you’re like many and have a standard conservatory with no built-in heating system and standard windows (without the fantastic Pilkington glass) – you open the windows and doors to the outside when it is too hot, and an internal door to transfer heat from your home when it’s too cold.

The benefits of being able to use your conservatory all year round are tremendous. For some of you it is not just a place to use when the Sun is out, but a spot to sit and contemplate life when it’s raining or to read.

A conservatory is often used as an extra space in which to entertain guests and though this can be extra special in the sunshine, it really is room to enjoy the view through all the seasons.

Perhaps you should give these rooms some extra thought before they are built by asking us, the professionals for guidance on do’s and don’ts? How they will link to existing rooms, how they will be heated and which direction they should face taking advantage of the sun’s rays are all questions you do not need to answer on your own.

We at Trade Price Conservatories have over 30 years experience and pride ourselves on offering top quality customer service to ensure that we meet all of your needs and requirements.

Radiators small or large and as a room feature

Radiators can be linked into your existing water system or can be free standing electrical items. If you are short of wall and floor space you may find them difficult to incorporate. However, there are some space-saving designs available from the minimal and discrete to the statement pieces that can act as a feature in a room.

To get the best heating results from your radiators, bleed them during the Summer months. Bleeding them eliminates any excess air that has been locked in the system. You will know if you have a problem as the radiator will be hot at the bottom and cold at the top.

Stand alone Fan Heaters

A plug-in fan heater will blow warm and hot air at a point in a room, but the heat will soon dissipate giving you only immediate warmth which may not be long-lasting. They can be quite noisy and a distraction if you are wishing for a quieter room, but they will definitely heat your conservatory. Air Conditioning systems

If you’re not keen on having items stand on the floor, why not take a look at a wall mounted air conditioning unit? These provide a means for all year round climate control. Depending on the model you choose features can include remote control, a built-in dehumidification function, and a timer for added convenience. Stand-alone units may again be too big if you have limited space within your conservatory.

Underfloor heating system

Underfloor heating is generally associated with stone or tiled floors, but can be fitted in a carpeted room, providing the carpet is not too thick and stops the heat from rising. Special underfloor heating mats can be rolled out to cover larger areas and can also be used under rugs and carpets. It can run on electricity or a pumped water system. An electrical system is usually easier to install on existing floors, as a water system needs to be embedded in the floor. A series of electric wires or pipework (for a water system) are laid covering the floor of a room. If you choose a water system, a controlled flow of warm water from a heat source is pumped through plastic tubing. Both systems are fitted with a sensor that connects to the room thermostat; this allows you to control the temperature and pre-set the system to turn on or off.

Energy Saving Blinds

With a large glass area in the conservatory, blinds will be an additional help in cutting the cold, helping to keep the heat in your conservatory so you don’t have to turn the thermostat up. The blinds can be made from a special material that deflects the cold penetrating through the glass. The blinds are made in a variety of styles, shapes and material colours and will fit in with any colour scheme you may have in your room.

Pilkington Glass

We use the industry leaders in glass solutions, Pilkington Glass, for your Tiled Roof Conservatories windows. You can choose from a wide product range including; self-cleaning, thermal, solar and noise control. The thermal class helps to regulate and control the temperature in your conservatory by keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We can give you further information regarding the benefits of Pilkington Glass. Please do not hesitate to call us on 01202 399999.

It is important that the heat you put into your home stays there and is retained in the best possible way. For novices, with only a little experience, soft furnishings, curtains, windows and the type of flooring you choose can have a huge influence on your heating bills and the warmth in your conservatory, so make sure you choose a heating system that is most suitable for your way of life.
Tiled Roof Conservatories

Conservatories are becoming more and more commonplace as people look to extend on their homes rather than move to a bigger property. The increased space that a conservatory provides can be used for many different purposes – from a lounge area to a dining room – providing a bright and open space to enjoy the surroundings of the garden. When it comes to purchasing a conservatory for your home, there are generally two options: do-it-yourself or use one of the many conservatory companies out there.

Do You Need Conservatory Companies?

1. Budget

Quite often, the decision of whether to build your own conservatory or hire the professionals to carry out the work boils down to budget. If you are operating on tight purse strings, the DIY option seems like the obvious choice, allowing you to save on labour. However, you may be thinking it may not be the best choice, based on if you are an inexperienced builder. Usually doing it yourself means running the risk of mistakes – mistakes that can prove costly if you need to hire a builder to come out and put them right. This is where Trade Price Conservatories are unique, not only can you purchase your dream conservatory for a fraction of normal retail prices, our expert staff will gladly help you to assemble your conservatory. If you are not from a building background, then do not fear.

2. Time

A conservatory can be constructed in a relatively short period of time. In a matter of days, your conservatory can be erected as we provide you with simple step-by-step guides for the entire conservatory. Do not worry about having to waste your precious holiday time from work. Dedicate one weekend, get some mates involved to make it an even more fun experience and you will have the finished product complete in no time.

3. Type of conservatory

The choice of conservatories on the market is vast and it is well worth getting help from us in making your decision. We know everything there is to know about any particular type of extension and can advise on style, size, and materials.

4. The choice

Tiled Roof Conservatories are without a doubt the cheapest option and as we have outlined you are certainly not left to your own devices with the construction of your conservatory. We are happy to help and guarantee to provide you with the extra space that really complements your home, inside and out. Therefore by using us, you get the best of both the DIY aspects and a conservatory company.

Conservatories and the Value of Your Home

First-time buyers receive a great deal of attention at the current time due to the increasing difficulty of making that first step on the property ladder. It is rarely documented however of the difficulties facing homeowners looking to move up the property ladder which is to becoming increasingly difficult.

Recent research shows that the average upscale from a two to a three bedroom property now stands at £27,100. Those looking to upscale from a three to a four bedroom house face the biggest hike in price at £64,032. As a result of these differences in price, coupled with the fees involved in moving home, more and more people are looking to improve & extend their current home to take the effect of upsizing.

When buying a property, many property developers will look at the potential to improve, modify and extend in order to increase the value, often with conservatories. This is also a technique now used by many buyers looking at the potential for home improvement.

It can be difficult enough to buy property, many considerations that must be taken into account. There are many issues that can reduce property value let alone increase it; however, the type of property you buy can dictate your ability to improve it or even make any additions at all. The type of property that best suits improvement will depend on the nature of the work you would like to perform. For example, when planning conservatories, it is important that there is enough room to install them without taking up too much garden space. Sometimes the easiest and cheapest way to increase your home’s value is to invest in an improving, up and coming area. Signs that an areas property market is set to improve can be relatively easy to find. These signs may include looking at particular areas or streets that are already popular with buyers. It is often the case that as particular streets or areas increase in value, buyers are priced out of their preferred location, so move as near to it as they can afford.

The important thing to remember is that there is no guarantee that any improvements made to your property will result in an increase in value, but there is a high chance of this. Furthermore, buyers in different locations will be after different things. It is an important consideration to ensure that you are offering potential buyers what they really want. For example, conservatories may be appealing to some but not to others. A good yardstick is often to consult the local estate agents who much a property would be worth subject to improvements being carried out, such as a new kitchen or a conservatory.

Often it’s the smaller, cheaper improvements, such as adding a conservatory that can generally offer higher returns than the more expensive ones. The larger and more expensive jobs such as converting your loft or basement may seem appealing to buyers, however, they are often unwilling to pay a premium that meets the expense and effort of carrying it out. The cost of any home improvement and the likely return will vary hugely on the type of property and the area that it’s located. Very few developments come in under budget with the majority coming in over budget.

At Trade Price Conservatories we aim to for your home improvements to come in under budget, as our prices are 70% cheaper than most conservatory companies in the market. Larger Single Storey Rear Home Extensions & Your Neighbours!

It’s true that if you can have a cordial relationship with those living near to you, life is much more pleasant. To be honest, most neighbours are at least “okay” – the “from hell” stories you read or see gain prominence simply because they are so unusual.

However, that said, one time when relationships can become strained is when larger home extension building work is being considered. To simplify matters, the government has introduced legislation, currently covering the period up to May 2016, to increase the size of permitted single-storey rear extension work, at the same time as introducing an associated neighbour consultation scheme.

Your quick guide to the new scheme

The size limits for single-storey rear extensions under permitted development has increased from 4 to 8 metres for detached homes and from 3 to 6 metres for all other dwellings. Any extensions within these new size guidelines need to go through the following steps:

• the homeowner must notify their local planning authority and provide a description and site plans of the proposal, together with the addresses of adjoining properties and contact address for the developer.

• the authority might ask for further information and will then serve notice to the adjoining properties (and copy in the developer), providing the above information (together with relevant time limits)

• an adjoining neighbour can raise an objection within (a minimum period of) 21 days and the authority will reach a decision based on this. • the developer can go ahead if notified of such a decision in writing by the local authority, or if no response is provided by that authority within the 42 day determination period

• if permission is refused, an appeal may be made by the developer

Any work then completed must be in accordance with the details provided and within all other relevant limitations and conditions applying – and must be completed by 30 May 2016 (the developer needs to advise the local authority of this completion).

The above is a simple summary to introduce you to the key parts of this new process. One piece of good news – there is no fee for this! You will, of course, need the full details and these are provided in the Larger Home Extensions: Neighbour Consultation Scheme V1.1 document issued by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

How much disruption will installing my conservatory cause?

It’s quite understandable that people get a little bit worried when having large-scale work done to any part of their home. However, when it comes to adding a typical conservatory, orangery or extension, you’ll be surprised what little effect the disruption and downtime has on your life, and how short it actually takes.

What you don’t want, is to wait months on end to use a certain room of your house – a gaping hole in the side of your home doesn’t look pretty, and it will cost an arm and a leg to heat a house with a hole in it. This is something you shouldn’t be concerned about. It is up to you and any help you employ, but it should only take a matter of days when it comes to building your conservatory – that’s no time at all considering the years of pleasure you’re going to get from the finished product.

If you have young children, it can be a concern that they’re living in a building site for a few weeks, and those environments can be quite unsafe. One thing that keeps people on edge is the worry that their home is in good hands, and the added stress is never good. However, you can be assured that one of the Trade Price Conservatory team delivering your conservatory is a trained professional and will give you exact instructions for handling materials and building the conservatory, and no harm will ever come to your young ones.

Having a conservatory added to your home has some striking benefits, some you’ve probably not thought too much about. Aside from the astonishing amount of extra space they provide (and they’re much cheaper than moving in to a bigger property), they let you enjoy your garden all year round, you can stay warm inside the conservatory and bring your garden inside – a conservatory can be a calming sanctuary, with beautiful views of the garden. In the winter, the structure captures the energy of the sun, making it quite a warm place to stay in – this could help to save on energy bills during difficult economic times.

If you do have any other queries – you may need to know if your garden is suitable to have a conservatory built on it in the first place, or if you want to know if it will have to be piled beforehand – trained advisers will talk you through all these tiny details and more, giving you a no-nonsense consultancy beforehand to give you a detailed lowdown. Whatever worries you had before will be ironed out in these informal chats, and remember, no question is a stupid question.

Alternative Uses for Your Conservatory

Typically, conservatories are places designed to chill out in, where you can sit and read a good book, or simply enjoy an evening’s conversation with friends and family. Conservatories can be versatile rooms, and if you use a little thought and imagination, instead of bringing your home into your garden, you could bring your garden into your home. The glass roof and exterior panels of a conservatory make the room an ideal place in which plants can thrive and flourish, meaning you can turn your conservatory into the most pleasant room of your house in which it’s a delight to spend time in at any time of the year.

So, why not consider giving your conservatory a whole new lease of life and turn it into a custom garden room? This is a way of adopting a brand new and extremely rewarding hobby. Tending plants and vegetables requires attention and dedication, but the rewards when your plants bloom and your vegetables ripen are inspiring. The added beauty of performing your gardening indoors is that you don’t have to worry about undertaking your important gardening tasks in the rain or freezing cold, plus the plants you are trying to nurture are protected from the elements all year round.

Of course, indoor plants need a lot of water as the rain can’t get to them, so if you’re aiming to turn your conservatory into a garden room and you’ve got a carpet down it’s time to rip it up. You need to think about adding a tiled floor and making sure your newly reappointed room has proper drainage. Your plants are going to need suitable ventilation as well, so creating openings within your conservatory is a must. Be mindful of security though – don’t leave your home vulnerable to miscreant activity when you are away.

As for the plants themselves, there are several specialist companies who will give you advice and suitable specimens when it comes to filling your new garden room. If you have a fancy for seeing your fingers turn a vibrant shade of green and to bless your sometimes-forgotten conservatory with a new lease of life, then this is surely the way to go.

The only conservatory cleaning tips you need

A grubby conservatory is never going to be pleasant to sit in, but when it comes to cleaning, things can be a little bit tricky. With a little time, a decent hoover and a feather duster, it’s easy enough to keep the inside of your conservatory spic and span, but what about the outside? To help you clean your conservatory like a pro, we’ve compiled a few top tips.

1. Avoid the lure of the power washer

You may be tempted by their promises of blasting off the dirt in minutes, but using a power washer on your conservatory can be a costly mistake. Power washers are strong and the force they use to clean could be too much for your conservatory so it’s best to steer clear. If you do use one, you could find that your conservatory panels get dislodged and this can be pricey to fix. Instead, it’s time to employ a bit of elbow grease. You’ll need a telescopic window cleaner and UPVC/window solvent cleaner to help shift the dirt. Start from the top and work downwards – that way the glass panels at the bottom will have had a good soaking before you tackle them, so they’ll be easier to clean. REMEMBER… you can opt for Pilkington’s Self-Cleaning glass, which reduces the need for cleaning exterior glazing through a dual-action coating. It uses daylight and rain to break down and wash away organic dirt. A great choice for practical reasons, if cleaning your conservatory exterior doesn’t excite you, and clearer, better-looking windows.

2. Don’t climb up on to your conservatory roof

Instead, use a ladder to climb up to roof level, use a brush to sweep away any dirt and then use your telescopic window cleaner to reach up to the roof and give it a good wash down.

3. Clean the gutters

Gutters can easily become cluttered with leaves and moss so make sure you give these a good clean out – especially in autumn when the leaves are falling.

4. Tackle moss

Treat your conservatory with a solution to remove moss and mould. This should be applied after you have swept and washed your conservatory, and it will hopefully help prevent any future build-up.

5. Inside

Check the inside of your conservatory for any moss or mould. If your conservatory is poorly ventilated this could be a problem. A warm bowl of water with a bit of washing up liquid will be ok to use inside and shouldn’t damage your conservatory seals. Have a read of our previous blog titled ‘Eradicating Condensation Problems in Your Conservatory’ for more detailed information about correctly ventilating your conservatory.

Installing a Conservatory on a Sloped Garden

If you are considering having a conservatory built on your garden, you will need to carefully weigh up the pros and cons of such a project. If you have a sloped garden, you may believe that a conservatory installation will be out of the question. However, contrary to popular belief, a conservatory could actually help you to give your garden a whole new lease of life.

A raised base conservatory will provide you with an effective way in which to add light and space to your property, despite your sloped landscape. A raised base will ensure that your walls are able to withstand the weight of your conservatory, and will render your ground type unimportant. If your land comprises loose and unstable earth that is prone to erosion, a raised base will be essential, as, without it, you would not be able to build your dream conservatory.

While a raised base conservatory is associated with a wide range of benefits, it will be more difficult to install than a standard concrete base conservatory. However, a conservatory will improve both the interior and exterior of your property, therefore, the installation will be worth the expense, and may even add to the value of your property in the long run. Since a raised base conservatory will be more challenging to install, we advise the use of our reputable staff that have had over 18 years experience.

If you plan to install a raised base conservatory, you will not usually require planning permission unless you intend to exceed the permitted development limit for your property, which currently stands at 70 cubic metres in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. If, however, you own a listed building or live in a conservation area, the permitted development limit is 50 cubic metres. Your need for planning permission will depend on whether or not your property has been extended in the past. If you have used up some or all of your permitted development limit, you may require planning permission for your conservatory. Your local authority should be able to confirm whether or not you require planning permission.

At Trade Price Conservatories we can advise you on the best options for your dream conservatory. If you believe there is an issue such as a sloped garden as we have outlined in this blog, we will work out a solution to meet your needs. Eradicating Condensation Problems in Your Conservatory

Condensation on conservatory windows is a common problem, and can often be worse in the winter when the temperature is lower. Designed to be both watertight and air tight, a conservatory has no natural ventilation and so is prone to condensation – especially when the door from your home through to the conservatory is left closed most of the time. There are ways of keeping the problem to a minimum, though, as we’ll describe below…

The best way to keep your conservatory condensation-free is to make sure that the room is well ventilated – and the same applies to the rest of your home too. Keep the room warm and leave the windows ajar slightly: this may seem strange, but it will help the air to circulate throughout the room, banishing your condensation problem. If you’re building a new conservatory or refurbishing an existing one, consider using trickle vents on the windows and doors, which will allow air to flow more freely than if the room had no ventilation whatsoever.

If possible, ventilate your home thoroughly when bathing, doing laundry and cooking, to avoid the unnecessary build-up of excess water. Keep doors through to the conservatory open where possible so that air can flow freely, and you’ll find that the problem is reduced in a very short space of time.

If you are struggling with very bad condensation in your conservatory, then a dehumidifier will help you to get rid of the problem. Dehumidifiers remove excess moisture from the air, thereby preventing it from settling on the windows as condensation. You can either buy a dehumidifier, or choose to rent one.

You should also avoid filling your conservatory with too many plants, as they will contribute to the build-up of condensation.

The latter are all good ways to help if you experience condensation in your conservatory but we can offer you an even better solution. Pilkington is leaders in the glass industry and suppliers for our windows for our Tiled Roof Conservatories. They have introduced an Anti-Condensation Glass designed to prevent the onset of condensation and improve the view through your windows. Pilkington Anti-Condensation Glass is suitable for a wide variety of commercial and domestic applications in combination with other energy-efficient glass products.

Remodelling Your Orangery’s Interior

There’s no more beautiful domestic space than that provided by an orangery. Whether you want to bring it up to date or restore it to its former glory, it’s worth going the extra mile to do it well.

Flooring

The best flooring for your orangery depends on two things, what you can afford, and how you intend to use the room. If you intend to keep a lot of plants, or if casual dining will take place there, a wipe-clean floor is best. Linoleum is the budget option and can look a lot better than you might expect, with many different colour options to choose from. Stone flags are the traditional option, from marble at the very top end to more affordable, but still stylish options like slate. Some people prefer sealed wooden boards, which can tie in neatly with décor themes elsewhere in the house, and also look good if the orangery is used as a sitting room. In this event, a carpet is also an option. Choose one that’s easy to shampoo or steam.

Furniture

The easiest thing to replace in an orangery is the furniture. The trick to doing it well is to match the style of tables and chairs to the shapes in the room itself, for instance by choosing tall, straight furniture, if the room has straight pillars and oblong shapes, or chairs with arched backs if it has arched windows.

Walls

In a wood-built orangery, repainting the walls is easy. If you have a stone one and are growing tired of the way it looks, consider plastering a feature wall – a job that can be done in just a couple of days. Painting it in a strong, defining colour can add character to the room. If you plan to have plants climbing across a wall, be sure to seal it against damp.

Windows and doors

Upgrading the glass in an orangery can be done at surprisingly low cost and can soon start saving you money on heating as well as making it look better. Improved seals on doors and windows also help. Some people also choose to upgrade their doors, for instance by removing old-fashioned patio doors and replacing them with more stylish, better quality bi-folding ones. These simple changes can make the orangery feel like a whole new room.

At Trade Price Conservatories we can help you to restore or improve your orangery and advise on the best options to meet your needs. Get in touch by calling 01202 399 999 or visiting our website; www.tradepriceconservatories.com

Eliminating Your Conservatory Qualms

Research has highlighted that nearly all conservatories suffer the same problems. The latest survey carried out in 2013 showed that the average conservatory owner is unhappy with at least two aspects of their conservatory and in most cases more, with nearly all relating to conservatory roofs. At Trade Price Conservatories we use specialist industry-leading suppliers for all products to ensure that all of our customers are 100% satisfied, eliminating any problems.

The main source of the complaints related to the temperature with 65% of owners complaining that their conservatory gets too cold in winter or too hot in summer. 1 in 3 also find it too noisy in bad weather, whilst 14% suffer leaks and 1 in 5 find it too expensive to heat. In total, a surprising 14% of conservatory owners found nothing wrong with their conservatory.

The survey was carried out across all types of conservatories including polycarbonate, glass, blue glazing and tiled conversions. The biggest surprise was that every person that had installed a tiled roof on their conservatory with the exception of one was still finding their conservatory too hot or too cold.

A massive 87% expressed they would be interested in a product that solved these problems and made it usable all year round. Which is where our 18 plus years of experience comes into play. Trade Price Conservatories not only helps you to make the correct decision about your conservatory requirements but will also provide you with a conservatory that you can use all year round whilst saving you up to 70% through real trade prices. You may be thinking to yourself this sounds too good to be true, well it isn’t.

To eliminate the commonly found roofing issues with conservatories, our do-it-yourself conservatories use Pilkington, an International leader in glass, for the ultimate in glass solutions. By using PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayers, the glass becomes a highly acoustic laminated glass that offers excellent noise reduction. Furthermore, you can choose thermally insulated windows reducing the amount of energy lost through your windows by up to 75% and lower your heating bills by up to 20% each year. In hot climates, solar control glass can be used to minimise solar heat gain and help control glare. Pilkington offers additional glass solutions such as self-cleaning, solar glass, fire protection and more with all products enhanced to ensure safety and security. By combining Pilkington alongside Synergy, windows and door suites, and Synseal, roof manufacturers, your Tiled Roof Conservatories from Trade Price Conservatories will offer you a fantastic additional room for your home that can be enjoyed all year round.

The Pros Vs the Cons of Building a Conservatory

One of the UK’s favourite hobbies is DIY so you should ‘do it yourself’ when it comes to building your conservatory. You can enjoy more than just the end result buys custom designing your conservatory, building your conservatory and saving 70% on the cost. This article outlines how the pros of a Tiled Roof Conservatories far outweigh the cons. The Pros

Most homeowners buy a conservatory as a simple extension to their home. Conservatories are extremely versatile as they can be used for so many different uses; lounge, extending your lounge, study, a conservatory for plants, dining room, playroom for the kids…their uses are endless.

One of the biggest ‘pros’ of building a conservatory is that you do not need planning permission. In England and Wales in 2008 a regulation was passed that stated ‘building a conservatory would be exempt from needing planning permission provided the permitted development permission for your property is not exceeded; 50-70 cubic meters dependent on where you live’.

In 2013, the government looked to introduce a conservatory tax, which would force homeowners to fork out hundreds of pounds extra on measures to improve energy efficiency when building an extension or fit a boiler. The plans were axed after a group of Tory ministers quickly blocked the move explaining that it should not be mandatory for owners to be penalised when they improve their properties. Pilot studies also found that the cost of energy efficiency measures was far higher than the savings on bills thus making adding conservatories to homes more expensive. The products we use at Trade Price Conservatories are designed for energy efficiency, therefore, you receive trade prices when buying your conservatory, a reduction on energy bills at home and NO conservatory tax keeping home improvements at an affordable rate.

An extension on your property adds value to your home so especially if you are investing in a property, adding a conservatory will increase the value for future resale.

The fact that your conservatory is DIY does not mean the designs are limited. We offer a wide range of modular designs through our versatile product line. The website lists all of the designs that are available from the Lean To, to the Edwardian, to the P Shape. We guarantee that you will find the right design to suit you and if you want something a bit more unique, we will customise it to your specification.

It keeps getting better; you get FREE delivery anywhere in England and Wales on all conservatories and they all come with a 10-year guarantee. The Cons

There are a couple of ‘cons’ but the reality is, most of you will not be affected by them and even if you are there are ways around them.

Listed buildings and conservation areas are an exception to the planning permission regulation. Furthermore, if your property has previously had an extension built onto it you will have used up some or all of your ‘permitted development’ area and therefore may need permission. Also in some cases, the ‘permitted development’ rights may be withdrawn from a property making it statutory for you to get planning permission. If you fall under one of the categories where you may need planning permission, if you are unsure do make sure you check.

In conclusion, the only real ‘con’ is that now you have no more excuses to not buy your dream conservatory. Trade Price Conservatories continues to offer top quality products at trade prices and not only do we provide a 10-year guarantee on all conservatories we guarantee a lifetime of satisfaction.
